Informed Autonomy at Deputy

For over a decade, Deputy has been providing a platform for businesses to facilitate their workforce time management, giving power to their customers’ employees to manage the shifts they work (or sometimes do not work). During this time period, the Deputy platform has evolved from just a single monolithic application to multiple services complementing the ecosystem across multiple engineering teams. A journey like this brings more fragmentation in the way engineers build applications, especially in a high growth environment.

To that end, the Systems Engineering team has been working hard on a vision for an Informed Autonomy approach to the wider engineering team: providing cross-functional squads with the capability to not only manage their own platform components, but to have the data up-front to make decisions with confidence. This vision culminates in a change in the way that the product squads work, lending them more flexibility and control with less requirements from teams across the business.
